What is Fine Free?

The South Holland Library is Fine Free!

South Holland Public Library is a fine-free library, meaning most items can be checked out at our library without worrying about overdue fines. Our mission is to Inform, Innovate, and Inspire our community by making resources easily accessible. While we ask that items be returned on time, our fine-free policy helps ensure everyone can learn and grow without the stress of late fines.

If you have questions about this approach, feel free to contact the Circulation Desk at 708.527.3152.

Fines vs. Fees

Overdue fines are daily charges for items not returned by their due date. At South Holland Public Library, these fines are no longer applied. However, fees will still apply for lost (unreturned) or damaged materials.

Overdue Items

Fines still apply to our Library of Things, with an overdue fee of $1 per day.

If an item is 14 days overdue or your account has outstanding charges of $5 or more, your Library card will be suspended until the overdue item is returned.

42 Days Overdue

Your account will be charged for the full replacement value of the item plus a $5 processing fee. Your South Holland Public Library card will be unusable until the item is returned or the fees on your account are less than $5.

60 Days Overdue

Your account (if owing more than $50) will be sent to the collection agency and a $10 non-refundable referral fee will be added to your account. Your South Holland Public Library card is usable once the item is returned or the fees on your account are less than $5.

Please contact the Circulation Desk at 708.527.3150 with questions about our Fine Free policy.

Lost & Damaged

If an item is lost or damaged, the patron will be charged for the cost to repair or replace the item, along with a non-refundable processing fee of $5 per item.

Items that are billed or lost may be returned. Patrons are responsible for overdue fines on Fine Free exempt materials, which will not exceed the item's cost.

Items that are billed or lost will be charged to the borrower at the price stated in the item record, plus a non-refundable processing fee of $5 per item.

If a lost item is returned within 30 days of payment and the original receipt is presented, the item’s cost minus the $5 processing fee will be refunded, provided it is in the same condition as when borrowed.
