With your South Holland Public Library card, you can …

Accepted forms of ID

  • A valid Illinois Driver's License, Illinois State ID or Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card with your current South Holland address. 

*If your driver's license or state ID does not show a South Holland address, you need a second document from the list below, dated within the last 3 months: 

  • Current Vehicle Registration 
  • Auto Insurance Card 
  • Utility Bill (e.g., cable, gas, electric, water, phone) 
  • Credit Card Statement 
  • Bank Statement 
  • Property Tax Bill 
  • Payroll Check 
  • Signed Lease or Mortgage Papers

Types of Cards

You will need:  

  • To reside within the incorporated Village of South Holland. 
  • A valid photo ID 

If you are under 18 years of age, you will need a parent or legal guardian to accompany you to register for your library card. 

Your South Holland Library card expires three years from the date you receive it.  

  • A valid photo ID is needed to replace both lost and expired cards.  
  • Expired cards are renewed at no charge.  
  • The replacement fee for lost cards is $1.00. 

If you are under 18 years of age, you will need a parent or legal guardian to accompany you to replace or renew your library card. 

Digital library cards are available to South Holland residents who don't have a library card yet and want instant access to all our online resources including eBooks, eAudiobooks, online databases, homework help, and more.   

Any teacher working in a public or private school, preschool, or daycare center within the boundaries of the Village of South Holland may apply for a Teacher Library Card.  

You will need: 

  • A valid photo ID. 
  • A valid school-issued ID from your educational institution. 

These cards allow an extended 4-week checkout for classroom materials and will be valid during the current school year through August.  

Please note that Teacher Library Cards do not allow for interlibrary loan requests or placing holds on items

Owners of businesses located within the Village of South Holland are eligible to receive a Business Library Card. 

You will need: 

  • A valid photo ID. 
  • Current business property tax bill. 

This card will be valid for one (1) year. 

Please note that the business owner is responsible for any lost or damaged items, and the Business Library Card is limited to the use of the named owner.

Individuals who own property that is not their primary residence, as well as non-resident tenants within the Village of South Holland, may be issued a Property Owner Library Card. 

You will need: 

  • A valid photo ID. 
  • South Holland property tax bill or a copy of your lease. 

This card will be valid for one (1) year. 

A non-resident is an individual who lives outside the service area of a public library.  

This includes: 

  • Individuals living in unincorporated South Holland. 
  • Individuals not eligible for a library card from another library. 
  • Individuals residing outside the jurisdictional boundaries of the Village of South Holland but whose high school taxes are paid to a South Holland high school.  

You will need: 

  • A valid photo ID. 
  • Payment for the non-resident fee. 

All members of a non-resident household are entitled to individual library cards, with only one non-resident fee charged for all residents at one residential address per year. 

The non-resident fee is determined annually by the Board of Trustees. 

Cardholders from libraries outside the SWAN network in Illinois can register their home library cards at the South Holland Public Library to obtain reciprocal borrowing privileges. This allows them to borrow most items from our collection.  

You will need: 

  • A valid photo ID 
  • A valid home library card 

The expiration date on your home library card will apply (if the expiration date is more than one year from today, it will be set to one year from the date of registration or renewal).

Please note that some items and services are reserved for South Holland cardholders.

Borrowing

Fine Free 

We do not charge late fees for most materials checked out from South Holland! Fines still apply to our Library of Things, with an overdue fee of $1 per day.

South Holland Library cardholders can access an amazing collection of items available for checkout.

Holds  

South Holland is a member of SWAN, providing access to a shared collection of books, music, movies, and data. 

  • If a book or other item is checked out, we can reserve it for you.  

  • If South Holland Public Library does not own a particular item, we may be able to borrow it for you from another library. Please contact the Reference Desk at 708.527.3160 for assistance. 

  • You can search for items, place holds, and cancel holds through the Aspen Catalog or the Mobile App from home. 

  • You'll be notified via email, text, or phone when your reserved items are ready, and they’ll be held for 7 days. 

  • To authorize someone to pick up your held items, please complete the Hold Pickup Release form available at the Circulation Desk. 

Renewals 

Most library items can be renewed up to two times as long as no other patrons have a hold on the item. You can renew at the Library, by phone, through your account in the Aspen Catalog, or the Mobile App. When renewing by phone, please have your Library card ready for reference. 

Returning

Materials may be returned to the Circulation Desk or the Youth Services Desk during business hours. The Book & Audiovisual book drops are located in the west parking lot and are accessible at any time.  

Please return Library of Things items to the service desk at South Holland Public Library, or a $10.00 charge will apply. Thank you for your help!
